The purchase price was $26,000.Mr. Cleveland expects to remove the handsome two-story stone residence now on the property and erect business structures on the site. The property consists of 100 feet on Wall street and 152 feet fronting on Fourth street. The converting of it into a business block will mark the end of the Murphy homestead, built ten or twelve years ago by the late Patrick Murphy, father of Howard Murphy.Home of Early Resident.Patrick Murphy was known as “the father of Joplin.” He came here years before the city of Joplin had been named. What now is Joplin was called Murphysboro, after him. It bore this name for several SLyears.Patrick Murphy was one of the men who helped in the early development of Joplin and contiguous territory. The home he built in later years is in close proximity to the heart of the business section and is one of the most beautiful residences In the city. The fact that it is to give way to business buildings is only another evidence of the progress and growth Joplin has made within the last few years.AtlPi15
