Shevin Disappointed In Gun Control RulingTALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP)-Atty. Gen. Robert Shevin says he's going to propose the 1973 Legislature ban sale or possession of Saturday night specials despite a Florida Supreme Court decision striking down another gun control law.In a 4-3 decision Wednesday, the high court ruled unconstitutional a law which prohibited the assembly of handguns from foreign-made parts.I was extremely disappointed, said Shevin, who defended the statute before the Supreme Court. It was the only meaningful gun control law ever passed by the Florida Legislature.”But the attorney general said he saw some glimmer of hope in the court's ruling that another law aimed specifically at elimi-.nating the cheap, easily concealed handguns could be sustained.Shevin referred to language in Justice James C. Adkins' majority opinion which said the results of the foreign parts law “would not be to ban the sale or possession of ‘Saturday night specials' in Florida . .The court’s ruling rejected Shevin's argument that the for-safer Jrom attack or injury.R. G. Industries Inc. and Firearms Import and Export Corp., two Miami firms specializing in making handguns from foreign parts, claimed that the law usurped Congress’ power to regulate foreign commerce.The majority opinion agreed with the firms and reversed Miami Circuit Judge Arthur E. Huttoe, who upheld the validity of the law last November.Shevin contended the law was intended to fill a gap in a fed-i eral law which bans importation of already assembled handguns. The court said correcting that was up to Congress.Adkins' opinion also said, one expert witness for the state admitted that he could not say that the statute would disarm one criminal.”Chief Justice Vassar B. Carlton and Justices Richard W. Ervin and David L. McCain concurred with Adkins. J ust ices B. K. Roberts, Joseph A. Boyd and Hal P.
