James A Shaver. 21, Rhinelander, who escaped from the Oneida j county jail last Dec. 26. was sen- ! tented to five years in Green Bay refoi matory Uday in County j Court on burglary and car t h e f t j charges in connection with his escape.At the same time two Woodruff icousins, Henry J. Stevens, 18. and j Norman W. Stevens, 22. were sentenced to shorter terms in the re-formatory for participation in a iseries of burglaries of summer!homes in the Woodruff-Minocqua area late in 1961.Shaver, who had been in Green 1 Bay three times previously, asked ; Judge George A Richards to sendhim to Waupun state prison, declaring “‘they won’t do me any good at Green Bay.” The court did not agree with Shaver, however, and said the sentence to the reformatory would stand. S h a v e r j may request a transfer later, the icourt noted.Three Charges.Shaver was charged with burg- j lary of the Harry Ehmann hunting lodge in the town of Enterprise and the theft of a car owned by Norman Blattler of Rhinelanderthe day of his escape. He also pleaded guilty to the theft of a car owned by a Hortonville man four days later as he and a companion. Ernest C Justice, 19. Sugar Camp, were enroute to Chicago. Justice, who fled from the jail with Shaver. still is at large. jShaver was sentenced to fiveyears on the burglary charge and two years each on the car thefts, with the shorter terms to run con-1currently with the iongcr term,Henry Stevens was sentenced to j three-year terms on U counts at , burglary, all to run concurrently. Norman Stevens drew terms of 18 months, also concurrently, on two counts of burglary. Both had priorrecords, the court wiled.‘Must Protect Public.’ IThe sentencing of the Stevens cousins followed by two days thesentencing of Henry’s b r o t her, Franklin J. Stevens, 24, also of Woodruff, in Circuit Court. Franklin. who changed his plea to guilty as the jury panel assembled for the start of his trial, was given 10 years in Waupun state prisonTuesday.Franklin was sentenced to concurrent terms of five years each for the same 11 burglaries charged to Henry and drew an additional five years on an arson charge resulting from his burning of a summer home to eliminate finger*; prints left during an earlier burglary.In imposing the sentences on Henry and Norman Stevens. JudgeRichards today commented thepublic has a right to protection, especially summer home owners I who must leave their places forlong periods. Disregard for the rights of others must be punished, jthe court noted. IPrior records of all three youngmen indicated they weic not prop- * er subjects for probation. Judge Richards noted.
