WEBB CITY MAN TAKESSELF TO COUNTY JAILO''tlO’! tlsitiWill Serve Out a $40 Fine—Convictedn aof Forcing His Three-Year-Old ! dChild to Take Drink of Whiskey.tiaUnaccompanied by an officer, Bert Hamilton, of Webb City, appeared at the county jail Thursday evening and gave himself over to the custody of Jailer William Weaver. Hamilton was fined $40 and costs Thursday by Justice Cresswell of Webb City, for forcing his three-year-old child to swallow whiskey. He was allowed the privilege of coming here without an officer to commit himself to jail.He brought with him the commitment paper made out by Justice Cresswell and Jailer Weaver, after going through the usual formalities for incarcerating a prisoner, put Hamilton behind the jail doors, where he will remain until he has served out the fine he was unable to pay.His arrest was the result of a complaint made by his common law wife, a woman 20 years of age, with whom he has been liivng for some time without the formality of a marriage ceremony. The child whom he had abused was their second baby, one having died a short time ago.It is a]^ ?ed that on account of Hamilton having reached home in a drunken condition, the woman had gone to her parents in Carterville to invoke their aid. When she returned soon afterward to the house for the baby, she found him forcing whiskey into the mouth of the child, and filling the entire neighborhood with terror bv his drunken hilarity. But for his arrest, he appeared intent on giving the child a fatal dose of the fiery is! liquid.When she told the pitiful story in court Hamilton offered no defense and r-! the court considered it a case for a heavy fine.
