MISTOOK iHS MAN.An Explanation «»f Ialy’s Assault onContractor ltucktnan.Fillmore S. S. Buckmau, the contractor, who was shot in the back on Friday night by J. M. Daly, suffered greatly ironi his wounds yesterday, and Dr*. Williams and Hutchins, his attending physicians, say that he is in a very precarious condition.Daly, who is locked up in the City Prison on a charge of an assault with intent to commit murder, still refuses to tell why he shot Buck man, or to make any statement in reference to ir. it is evident that his assailant mistook his victim for F. W. Buckman, a brother of the wounded man, who is foreman of the camp at Presidio Heights, where Daly was f rtnerly employed. The foreman stated yesterday that D .ly undoubtedly intended to shoot nim instead of his brother.. “The only trouble that occurred at the camp.” said the 1» mnnn, “was m regard to ajbed, which had been assigned to Daly, but which the cook had taken possession of. Daly asked that the cook be made to give up the bunk*, and when 1 refused to accede to the demand lie became angry and left the camp. (Jeorge Patterson, the proprietor of the Nevada stables, sent D.ily to us and we tlrst employed him as a shoveler and afterward as a teamster. He quit work of his own accord about five weeks ago, and drewall the money chat was due him.‘‘My brother never had anything to do with Daly, and there was no reason why he should have incurred his enmity. There can be 110 doubt blit that It was me lie intended to shoot. Daly had prepared to do the shooting by disguising himself. He was attired in old clothes and had shaved oif his moustache.”
