City Council in an attempt to purchase the bankrupt Ardmore Recreation Center.10 years ago• An attorney general’s opinion was considered being sought on whether a contract between the Limestone County Commission and Waste Away, Inc. for landfill services violated state competitive bid laws.• Limestone County Commissioners held another night meeting after landfill opponents asked commissioners to meet in the evening hours so working people could attend.• The Alabama Highway Department approved the upgrading of two busy Athens intersections.• A Hollywood, Calif, film crew from the upcoming national television special “Scandals 11” was in Athens recreating and interviewing residents in connection with a bizarre murder-kidnapping case that took place nine years ago. The show featured convicted killers and kidnappers Jackie Sue Schut and her ex-husband Harold Lee Schut. Those interviewed included Limestone County District Attorney Jimmy Fry, who prosecuted the case, Limestone County Chief Deputy and former DA investigator Bobby Smith, who investigated the case. Also interviewed was Clyde Reeves, the man who found baby James Clemons in Morgan County that night in early 1980, abandoned in a field in subfreezing temperatures. Jackie Sue Schut was convicted by a Limestone County jury in May 1987 for murdering Athens housewife Geneva Clemons and kidnapping her then 17-day-old son.• A committee of local residents met in Athens to discuss how to isolate the cause of what some believe to be a high rate of cancer cases in some western Limestone County communities.• Because the county’s Department of Human Resources office had no backlog of investigated child neglect or abuse cases, and no great number of children in foster homes, the local office wouldn’t qualify for additional staffing under the states new child welfare reform program, said Caroline Page, DHR supervisor for child and family services.*
