DONALD KENNEDYSTATE HIGHWAY COMMISSIONERiPROPOSED UPPER PENINSULA ROAD PROGRAMt kckso »* ^US-2Predicting a continued upsurge in the volume of traffic on Upper Peninsula highways, State Highway Commissioner G. Donald Kennedy has announced a long-range construction program involving 82 projects, 12 of which are on US-2. Three of the twelve projects are in Gogebic county. The plan, based on a surveyi destined to contribute to the ultimate solution of the Upper Peninsula's winter and summer transportation problems, would be the largest ever undertaken in this section of the state. It would include the continued development of US-2, US-41 and M-28 as well as work on virtually every principal highway in the Upper Peninsula.Due to the fact that several of the highways are listed by the War Department as strategic roads, Kennedyis hopeful that additional federalfunds will be available for their de-;!Ivelopment as a part of the national defense program.Kennedy declared that although the plan is extensive in scope it is entirely feasible under a long-range program and that its completion would be of distinct benefit to the entire state. The three projects on US-2 in Gogebic county are:1—Relocation and paving from Wakefield west for three and a fraction miles, connecting with the existing pavement at Ramsay. The relocation will shorten the distance and will eliminate several dangerous j curves and narrow places on the existing route.2—Construction of two bridges on the Wakefield west relocation, which will be north of the present route.and on a more direct route to Ramsay.3—Paving from Ramsay through Bessemer toward Iron wood, two and a fraction miles. The existing surface is narrow macadam.Other projects for the improvement of US-2 under Commissioner Kennedy’s proposed road program for theUpper Peninsula are: Constructionof a bridge over the Cut River in Mackinac county; relocation and paving from the High Rollways to Epou-fette. three and a fraction miles, in Mackinac county; paving from Blaney Park east, six and fraction miles; relocation and paving in the City of Gladstone; Ford River bridge in Delta county; relocation at the Penn Mine Mine near Vulcan; Fortune Lake bridge and relocation west of Crystal Falls; Iron River east relocation; bridge over Iron River in thei!I!!!Village of Iron River. The above map shows the proposed Upper Peninsula road program for US-2, identified as below;1.
