FORCED HIS BABY TO SWALLOW WHISKEYDrunken Father of 3-Year-Old Child Caught in the Act of Pouring Liq-or Into Lts Mouth.For forcing his three-year-old babe to swallow whiskey, Bert Hamilton, 40 years of age, was yesterday fined $40 and costs by Justice Cresswell.His arrest was the result of a complaint made by his common law wife, a woman 20 years of age, writh whom he has been living for some time without the formality of a marriage ceremony. The child whom he had abused was their second baby, one having died a short time ago.It is alleged that on account of Hamilton having reached hoifle in a drunken condition, the woman had gone to her parents in Cartervill? to invoke their aid. When she returned soon afterwards to the house, for the bahv, she found him forcing whiskey i '?* the mouth of the child, and filling the entire neighborhood with terror by his drunken hilarity. But for this arrest, he appeared intent on giving the child a fatal dose of the fiery liquid.When she told her pitiful story in court, Hamilton offered no defense and the court considered it a case for a heavy fine. The law provides a maximum penalty for tho offense charged on $200, and Judge Cresswellgave him a $40 fine and costs. In default of payment he went to jail.
