A Dark Deed.—A Barn Fired andBurned.—On Thursday' evening of last week, Mr. Henry E. Sipe, of East Rockingham, was so unfortunate as to have hisbarn with all its contents destroyed by fire, the diabolical works of an incendiary. Mr. Sipe had a negro boy about 17 years of age living with him, named Jim Arbc-gart, who was induced to set fire to his employers barn by a colored woman named Charlotte Harris, who to recompense the boy for his services promised him a very fine present. The baru was a very large and fine one, riieasuring 82 X 50 feet and cost its owner $900 in cash besides the lumber, 70,000 feet and 40,000 shingles to build it, making a total cost of about §1,-800. With it was destroyed 2 horses, 3 head of cattle, 300 bushels of grain,J9 bushels clover seed, 8 barrels of flour, a ton of plaster, a wheat fan, cutting box, all the harness and farming implements including 13 plows, together with feed, e. Mr. Sipe’s loss will reach $3,000. He is insured iu the East lloekinghain Fire Insurance Company in the sum of $1,000. The colored boy who confessed to the crime was at once brought to town and lodged in jail, and the woman escaping to Albemarle. Officers Henry Lamb and brother together with a son of Mr. Sipe’s started in pursuit. of and it is to?bo hoped have secured her. This is tie second misfortune that has befallen Mr. Bipe’s barn, but having the pluck, he won’t surrender, and has already made his calculations to rebuild on a larger scale than heretofore.
