Examination After Auto Mishap Leads To Arrest Of Anamosa PairOfficers ObtainjFull ConfessionsAn automobile accident caused by driving while intoxicated last Wednesday evening resulted in the solution of burglaries in a dozen eastern Iowa towns and two attempted bank robberies.Jailed were two Anamosa men, Martin W. Schipper, 35, and Harry Foley, 33. Both men are former inmates of the state reformatory at Anamosa. Preliminary charges of breaking and entering in the nighttime were filed against the men by County Attorney James T. Remley.Monticello ManIt cost a Monticello man, Raymond Luckstedt, damages estimated at $480 to have a hand in capturing%the two criminals.Luckstedt. was driving to Cedar Rapids from Monticello when the car driven by Schipper collided with Luckstedt’s Buick. Schipper was charged with drunk driving after the accident. Investigation of the accident by Sheriff Lewis Dreibelbis showed heavy hammers, chisels and pry bars in the trunk of Schipper's car. When confronted with this evidence, Schipper started freely telling of his criminal career.Arrest FoleySchipper’s admissions implicated Foley, who was arrested later Friday night. FBI agents from Cedar Rapids questioned the pair concerning the bank robbery at Baldwin last year, but the men denied knowledge of the affair.Schipper signed a statement Friday night admitting that he alone burglarized the following places:Lowden—Fox Produce Company, March 15, 1950. Schipper said this was his first burglary.Anamosa—Schoolhouse safe, $400,FBI Quizzes Pair About Baldwin BankWrit Of Attachment, Divorces Fill District Court AgendaSchipper and Foley, Anamosa men sought in connection with a long string of robberies in eastern Iowa, were each slapped with two charges in district court at Anamosa.Jones county attorney James T. Remley Saturday filed against Martin W. Schipper two separate charges of breaking and entering a building in the nighttime. First charge concerns the breaking into the Quality Cafe in Anamosa on September 28, and the second charge concerns the affair at the Anamosa public school building on Dec. 7. Schipper has admitted both charges and will enter his plea on March 8 before the district court.Harry Foley was charged at the same time with breaking and entering a building in the nighttime in the Quality Cafe case. Attorney Remley also charged Foley -with larceny in the nighttime on the same case. Both of the charges have been admitted to officials.Both Foley and Schipper are still in custody of the Jones county sheriff in the county jail.- -------Schipper has been named in’two charges already filed against him by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In the meantime, they were charged with bank burglary by a federal warrant obtained by the lowa-Nebraska office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.Long Case Sheriff Dreibelbis, relieved over the final solution to a long string of unsolved eases in this section of Iowa, told Monday of the long history behind the case.Careful records are kept in the Sheriff’s office at Anamosa on all unsolved criminal actions in the state and are continually checked to uncover similarities.Dreibelbis said that after several break-ins. a pattern began to show up which gave officials reason to suspect the Anamosa pair. FBI men were called in to help with the case, but advised Dreibelbis to wait until lie either caught the men red-handed or could present such strong evidence that he could obtain a conviction.Take Turns Working with Anamosa city police officers. Sheriff Dreibelbis and Deputy Sheriff Lawrence La-Barge took turns maintaining an all-night vigil every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night for the past few months. John E. Thom, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Riedel of Monticello and a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Riedel of Lang-worthy, has been awarded a Bronze Star medal with a “V” device for heroism after saving the lives of two soldiers in Korea.Sgt. Thom, now enroute home, was a radio operator for an infantry headquarters company. According to his citation, he left a comparatively safe position and “rushed out through intense enemy fire” to give first aid to two wounded soldiers and carry them back to safety.sheriff’s office.* * *The charge of breaking and entering in the nighttime against Schipper will most likely be changed, depending on the outcome of discussions held this week with the FBIagents, the State Attorney General a n d county officials.
