Thomas Jefferson Duval and Forbes stay in the same cell on the second tier of the old Annapolis jail. Mr. Duval is keeping a death-watch over the condemned prisoner. He is one of four deputies who take turns “on watch.The cell is about as large as an average-sized parlor in a fashionable neighborhood. ( lose to the north wall is astove, which keeps the apartment good ami warm. Several steps to the west there’s a window of ordinary size. Fromit th«* jail yard, where Sheriff Armingeris fixing the scaffold, can be seen. Thew atchers spend most of their time at the window, which is by all odds the most cheerful part of the cell.Forbes bed, or couch, is in the southeast corner. He sits there nearly all day long and w rites what are intended to be Scriptural passages. He uses heavy brown paper, a lead pencil and capital letters.He also helps time escape by drawing,after a fashion, horses, dogs ahd other animals, men, boys and girls. He doesn't care to talk about the young woman he assaulted.“Did you know she is married! wasasked.Who is married! he quickly retorted.It“Miss Phipps.Dog Miss Phipps, he exclaimed, sul-lenly lowering his head, “1 don’t want t’ year nothin’ ’bout her ”Forbes has lost all fear of beinglynched. He manifests not the slightest nervousness unless questioned quicklyand closely, and says he hasn’t been thinking about the hanging and doesn’t Intend to tldnk about it until just previous to the execution.
