Testifies AtPickett TrialBy Terry KellyA mild murmer of expectancyran through the more than 200 spectators in the Tipton Circuit courttoday when defense attorney, Fioyd Cook, called a 7-year-old boy to the stand after the defense hadrested it’s case, in. the second degree murder trial of Clarence Pickett.The final witness for the defensewas Richard Dell, a second grader at Lincoln school and the son of Mr.and Mrs. William Dell, 836 North iIndependence. The Dell residenceis adjacent to the home of Margaret Smith, who was killed last | May 10. The defense tried to e la- *blish that the youngster bad seen j a car containing three men drive up j to the Smith home on the fatal !morning and that two men had driven away at a rapid rate after three shots were fired.The boy stuck to his story evenunder the light-touch questioning ofprosecutor Loren Joe Heaton. Heaton did place before the jury thefact that a porch could haveblocked the boy’s view of the entrance to the Smith home. The boy claimed to have seen the men froman upstairs bedroom in the Dellhouse. His bedroom overlooks aroofed porch on the Smith home.The 42 year old defendant, attired in a n?at salt and pepper graysuit and an open sport shirt, tookthe stand and irelated a story of seeing two men in the Smith homenear 3 a.m. on May 10.
