This move was decided on yesterday. For months the department has been cognizant of the fact that shameless practices were of nightly occurrences at the vile den, hut until Wednesday night not a hand has been lifted to eradicate the evil. .Two weeks ago when the house was filled wfth half drunken men and women it wasreported there was too mi^i noise being #made. It was after 2 o’clock in the morning, an hour when people whose calling does not compel them to work, are supposed to be asleep that the revolted revelry was goingon.Captain Hyland decided to arrest the entire outfit, but by the time he could get aforce sufficient to drag the den the men— and they wrere white men, four of them traveling men from Evansville—had become sick of the revolting scene enacted within and had taken their departure. The raid was therefore postponed. Chief of Police Meagher w'as asked last night concerning the contemplated movements of the policein regard to -the Brown joint and he said that no more dancing would be allowed. Chief Meagher knows a good deal of what is going on in this city, but he admitted to an Express reporter that he did not know of the hideous carryings on at Brown’s until a few days ago. It has been brought to my notice within the last few days,” said he, “and I told Captain Hyland to put a crimp in the whole outfit at the first opportunity. Yon know and I know that houses of prostitution are bound to exist in every city, Terre Haute not excepted, and as Mrs. Brown has no ambition above that plane of life she will no doubt continue to keep some sort of a place. You can say as coming from me, however, that there will be no more of the carry!“• ' on that has characterized the place of latt. The first time our men hear that piano squeak or catch a note from a guitar or banjo after 11 o’clock just that quick will you see the patrol wagon back up to the door. 1 will say more than this. The first girl I hear of dancing in the house I will see to it that she leaves the city. That dancing board has got to come out. I was shocked when I heard of the terrible things being done in the house.”Captain Hyland said: “We would have pulled Mrs. Brown three or four days ago but for the fact that we wanted to catch the place full of the negroes who are chronic loafers there. It was reported to me not loDg since that she has been trying to bribe our officers. About a week ago the policeman in that district walked through the alley and hearing a guitar playing went in and ordered the music stopped. Mrs. Brown followed him out and begged to beallowed to play softly for a few minutes. She was told she could not do so and the officer went away. He suspected that she would start the music up and in about twenty minutes he went back. Sure enough the music was going. He ordered it stopped a second time and this command brought Mrs. Brown out to the front gate. She had $2 in her hand and offered the officer the money if he would permit the music' to go for a few minutes. Ten minutes after she had attempted to bribe the patrolman the matter was reported to me and I went down to pull the place. The men were gone and seeing I hadn’t enough men to do the job I decided to wait. I pulled*Mrs. Brown when she was on Third street four times within two weeks and I may have occasion to repeat the dose. There will be no more foolishness. 'When women of her stripe j think they can buy one of our officers for $2 they had best be suppressed. No: so far as 1 know no one has been robbed in the house. ’When Mr. Brawn was on Third street she knew of the doings there, but she told Captain Pierce when she went on Poplar street tfcat she would see to it that no one was “touched.” She has on one or two occasions aided the police, but this fact will not stand between her and the law.I know of a dozen or more nice young men who are in the habit of going to this dive.. They are the young sons of business men.
