303030EUREKA RIVER(By The Gazette’s Correspondent)EUREKA RIVER, February20.—The bean supper and dance at the Montagneuse school house on Tuesday February 14th was a decided success. A large crowd was present and enjoyed themselves thoroughly, a faculty that the people of this community seem to possess in abundance despite hard times and lack of decent prices for their commodities. The feed situation for horses and cattle has assumed serious proportions. Horses that have freely ranged for several years have succumbed, and people are hauling wheat straw from as far distant as Fairview to try to tide over the remaining period of winter. We understand that Chief Lowe and Mrs. Mosquito of the Indian Reserve have lost over 20 head. Two years of exceptionally deep snow have certainly taken their toll.Apparently this is the year in which the rabbits are decimated j by disease, in their regular seven-1 year cycle. Thousands of dead rabbits are to be found all over the country, and it behoves people to be careful, at least for a time, of the water from the streams when the spring freshets come. The last heavy snows have driven the moose towards the Peace River. Every day fresh tracks show a southward movement of great numbers of them.Mr. Wilson, Inspector of schools of Peace River, paid official visits to schools in this neighborhood last week. The word has been passed through here by moccasin telegraph that the main highway will be extended several miles this summer. Let us hope that the news is authentic.■t
