It is evident that public sentiment is not fully aroused to the horrors of the lynching and burning of George Ward, and the demonstration al the sheriff's office today indicates that no one will be punished for the lynching. The lyncbiug of Ward has created wild consternation among the negroes in this section of the state. As the excitement decreases among the white people it increases amoug the1 colored mfiu. They are loud in thgircondemnation of the Terre Haute Many have lied from Terre HuSw^ fearing u mob may take them in band.”Must Mot Denounce thp.Mob.A dispatch from Brazil say*: “AtSeeleyville, a mining town near here Wednesday night a mob of miners attempted to lynch a negro miner named Brown, who had openly denounced the Ward lynching at Terre Haute. When Brown lt;juit work he found a mot» awaiting him at the mouth of the mine with a noose. Members of the ■mot*- attempted to grab trim.but *e broke away and rau, followed by the mob. Brown managed to keep ahead of liic pursuers until he reached the highway. An interurban car was passing, the motor man took in the situation, reached out, pulled Brown upon the car and put on full power.Popular Sympathy with tha Mob.Indianapolis. March L—The Newa special from Terre Haute says: “The Important question at Terre Haute is* what will be done by the authorities toward punishing the men who took part in the mobbing and burning of George Ward, the negro? No one ha the hundreds of men composing the mob made any effort to eonce£T bis identity, either while battering down, the doors of the jail or while hanging and burning Ward. No masks were worn. There are few people in Terre Haute who are not in sympathy with the mob and its work, although the burning of the fiend's body, after he was dead, was regarded as an unnecessary act.Regret of the Thoughtful.The more thoughtful people of the city regret that so many women and children were permitted to gather cm the bridge and on the banks of the Wabash, where they witnessed the execution and saw all the horrors of burning the body. There was no sincere effort made by the police or the sheriff (o stop the mob when it went after Ward at the jail and there-was little or no effort made to rescue him from the bauds of the men who dragged him through the streets.CALU.HET CANAL BILL IS DEAD.
