I\5kimruldhe was'ounty Hawkschildren,HighwayGutitJvtrlMrand Mrs. Tony Aguilar, 404 Rainbow Drive, entertained their son, Tony, and his friend from Ranger Junior College, Dang Xuan Nhon, an 18-year-old student who ls attending college in America on a scholarship awarded by the South Vietnamese government.Nhon was born in Quang Nam, South Vietnam and had been making his home in Saigon where he was attending school. He is called Nhon. In Asia the last name is always written first, so Nhon s last name is Dang.Nhon said there are 40 to 50 high schools in Saigon and most are private. The public schools are free and are considered superior. He attended the Chu Van An High School. To earn his scholarship, Nhon had to learn two languages, French and English. There are special schools, he said for the study of music, math and English. He attended school for five hours six days a week and studied five or more hours at home each night.The French grading system was used and Nhon said the programs were so difficult that only about 40 per cent passed. Nhon was rated very good” which is mandatory to receive ascholarship. He is nowmaking straight A’s atRanger Junior College.Elementary school in Vietnam is composed of grades 1 through 5 and high school, grades 6 through 12.Nhon will be in the U. S. for 10 years studying to become a doctor and then will return to his country. He receives $00 every threemonths from his government. He first came to America December 28,1972.Reflecting on his impressions of the U. S. so far, Nhon said he “loves America”. Though he misses his family very much, he says he thinks the American “people are very lucky.”Because of the war, Nhon’s father had to be separated from his family. He was ordered to move to Da Nang to* work for a company therv He had previously been a self-employed salesman in Saigon.Nhon remembers in 1968, when the war was at its heighth in Saigon. During the night, he said he was terrified with the war raging all around his home. The Viet Cong set a machine gun up right beside his house each night and removed it during the day.
