Police Capture Averts Possible GunplayRevolver-Carrying DadCommitted For 35 DaysA 29-year-old man tvas committed to Gardner State Hospital in lieu of S100G bail today* after he was captured at 1.30 a.ro, in his estranged wife’s home, where he attempted to draw a .45 automatic revolver on a police officer.Police said Clayton H, Whitney of 18 Pleasant street, who pleaded innocent in- district court to a chargeof carrying a dangerous weapon Without a permit, also threatened to kill his wife. They said he was in the process of taking their two children from her home at the time of his arrest.Judf^ *d! state hospital and continued the case to Wednesday, April 4, for trial and disposition.Highly commended in the capture was Ptl, Andrew M. Quinn, who with Ptl. Kenneth B. Maynard went to the 181 High street home of Mrs. Gloria A. Whitney after receiving information that a man was en route there to kill his wife.Upon arrival, the pair found Mrs. Whitney was out and a babysitter, Mrs.- Ina Wirkkala, answered the door,“He’s in the kitchen/' Mrs. Wirkkala told-police, “He's got a gun. Be careful—he has the childrtn with him.Ptl. Quinn entered the kitchen id Whitney, apparently surprised y the officers* presence, allegedly cached into his pocket for the gun, ter identified as a Colt. .45 caliber utomatic/Ptl. Quinn lunged at the man and ,rabbed his arm. Holding him se-curely, despite the prisoner’s intense struggling, Quinn told Maynard to search him.
