Watered booze causedroar in theBy DON BUCHAN (Second of two parts]In the decade known as The Roaring Twenties, the greatest roar came from an illegal dealer in alcohol who purchased a load of tins supposed to be full of alcohol and found they contained only water.It was the time of hip flasks, lady drinkers and teenagers who thought it “smart to get loaded. •It was also the beginning of huge* fortunes accumulated by bootleggers who later invested in industry and business and are the fathers or grandfathers of tycoons of today.It was an era of scofflaws. Desperate men guarded loads of alcohol as it came from Chicago and desperate men hijacked it oh the roads.It brought armed gangsters into small towns. One Sunday morning in Spencer there was a.shoot-out on Main (now Grand). A bullet fired from a speeding automobile at another entered the home of John Smith who lived on the corner of Second and Main. It missed his invalid daughter,TwentiesMaude, but only by a few inches.An undercover agent, working for the sheriff, was beaten to death in’ front of the post office which was then just across the street south of the west end of the Tangney hotel.He managed to stumble a block west to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Jensen. He spoke to them and mumbled about two men. When he reached his rented room, he collapsed and died.Formerly employedInvestigation revealed that he had been employed by various other county sheriffs in Jowa. He had given the Jensens a story that he was a door to door salesman for a spot remover and his name was George Cook,.-Deputy Sheriff A. L. Risley of' Calhoun coUnty where he had worked as an informer, knew him as C. L. Plummer. H. C. McArtor of Spencer said he knew the mau in KeokuH and What Cheer as Bert Cook.
