Swan.Today, shortly before noon, John M. Swan passed away. He was attacked early Tuesday morning with epilepsy, while asleep, and almost continuously until his death, the terrible disease manifested ttself in its worst form. Only a few of his intimate friends knew that he was afflicted with the fearful malady, from which he suffered slightly several times within the past year, but on the evening before the fatal attack he was in apparent good health, and participated in a game of whist at the residence of a family friend.Mr. Swan was born in Ohio in September, 1846, and in the following spring his father came to this city and opened out a general store in the building now * occupied by Carpenter’s jewelry store. He built the residence on the cornor north of Wm. Garrett’s, now owned by Mr. Lindstadt. In this house Mr. Swan’s only sister, Mary, was born, and , there both parents died while the chil- 1 dren were yet young. The subject of 1 this sketch found employment in the wholesale drug house of E.E. Gay, and was a traveling salesman for that merchant until he went out of 1 business, when he worked a short time for Werner Boecklen, and about sixteen years ago went into the wholesale musical instrument, toy and druggist sundry business, associating himself with Mr. ' Frank, under the name of J. M. Jwan Co. Later R. M. Ewing was admitted to a partnership, and the firm name was changed to Swan Ewing. Business reverses came to the firm, however, and about a year ago they made an assignment for the benefit of creditors. At the time of his death Mr. Swan was in the employ of Mr. Ellery, the assignee, who is closing out the stock.Mr. Swan was never married and the only member of his family is his sister, Mrs. Mary Boal, who resides in Los Angeles, Cal., whs was notified of his illness and his death. Tbe late A. R. Rhodes was his mother’s brother, and the funeral will be held from Mrs. Rhodes' residence,’corner of Sixth and Court streets, Saturday morning at 10 o’clock.The deceased was a man much esteemed by his friends and acquaintances in this city and throughout the west where he had travelled extensively representing Burlington business iateiests. He was quiet and reserved, especially since business reverses came upon him. The young people with whom he associated and the older citizens who have known him since boyhood will mourn his untimely death.
