BELLE FONTAINE, Ohio CAP)—The fiO year-old town marshal of nearby West Liberty was shot to death early hxlay in a gun battle with a Michigan man who in turn was shot and wounded by the marshal.Marshal Sherman Ricketts died at the scene of bullet wounds in the chest and groin, but his blaring gun still managed to fell a man identified by deputy sheriffs as Fail R. Jacobs, 24, of Jerome, j Mich.The deputies reported that Rick etts came upon Jacobs as the lat | ter was attempting to switch li-1 cense plates on a car believed to have been stolen in Michigan The report made of the shooting by the sheriff's office said Jacobs grabbed a gun from the seat of the car and started firing at Ricketts.The marshal fired back, and Jacobs was hit in the arm and ankle. The wounds kept him from leaving the scene and he was taken into custody upon arrival of deputy sheriffs.Officer* said Jacobs admittedshooting the marshal, but that they planned no formal filing of charges pending further investigation. Jacobs was taken to Mary Rutan Hospital here where his wounds were described as not serious.Meanwhile authorities saia Jacobs was paroled May 1ft to Cleveland from the Chilli cothe, Ohio. Federal Reformatory where he had served 33 months for interstate auto theft under com mitt ment from Illinois.
