Dotson, a former employee of the bank; Peggy Thompson, co-owner of a service station and carpet store; and Nell Thompson, who has a retail store in Louisa.Norman K. Hughes, a Louisa ieweler, was found guilty only of bank embezzlement.The four were among eight people named in a 58-count indictment issued in February 1987 by a grand jury in Ashland.The indictment alleged that the defendants took part in financial transactions that began in the late 1970s or early 1980s and may have involved individual sums as large as $300,000.A witness in the trial said bank records were destroyed to cover up the scheme. Most of the transactions apparently involved cold checks that were paid by the bank but not deducted from the accounts of check writers, including the defendants.Most of the accusations concerned Lynn A. Courtney, who was in charge of bookkeeping.Mrs. Courtney was charged in the indictment with one count of conspiracy, 25 counts of misapplying bank funds and five counts of falsifying bank records.She pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy and testified as a government witness. She could be sentenced to five years in prison and be fined $10,000 on the conspiracycount.The defendants could receive sentences of five years and fines of up to $10,000 on each count.Charges against three others named in the indictment were dismissed. They are Mrs. Courtney’s husband, O. Wendell Courtney; Mrs. Dotson's husband, Jim H. Dotson; and Peggy Thompson’s husband, Cecil D. Thompson.
