Mucie Claims Self-Attempt At AbortionKANSAS CITY (AP) - Dr. Richard F. Mucie, charged with manslaughter In the death of a University of Oklahoma coed, testified Wednesday that he treated her only after the young woman attempted an abortion on herself,“I did not do it,” Mucie said, “To perforate a uterus a doctor m ist be out of his mind. If I perforated it, I would know it/' Miss Nancy Ward, 19, of Las Vegas, Nev,, died in Mucle's office Feb, 8,Mucie testified he lied to a county grand jury when he said Miss Ward had died of a heartattack, but he did this, he said, to protect her reputation, Mucie said he examined the girl to determine her condition and the length of pregnancy and found the fetus to be 4V2 to 5V2 months old. Later, the doctor said, Miss Ward telephoned him that she felt ill and he agreed to see her again,She told me ‘I had to do it, I just had to do it,' Mucie testified.The osteopathic physician said he again examined Miss Ward and determined that an abortion had been partially accomplished,“There was only one thing to do,” he testified, “so I went in there and cleaned the uterine wall,”He said all tests on her then were normal, but that a few hours later he could not arouseher.Dr, Raymond J, Caffrey, a pathologist, has testified that Miss Ward died from loss of blood and shock, He said a one-half inch long hole had been found in the uterus.
