Ex-Area Man Killed In Beer Tavern BrawlVernon Cox, 25, of Detroit,Mich., formerly of Winona, wasfatally wounded in a brawl atthe tavern of Rubin Puryear at 12:30 a.m. Sunday on the Min-den-Winona Road. Two women also were wounded during the fracas.According to Oak Hill State Police, Cox had gone to Pur-year’s tavern and apparently gotten into an argument when the shooting began.Cox reportedly pulled a gun on Puryear and Puryear brought forth a gun and shot Cox. After Cox was shot, his brother, Cleveland stepped in to assist his brother when Puryear opened fire once again and erroneously shot Mrs. Billy Riggins, 37, of Winona in the left foot. After the shots rang out, Victoria Medley, scrambling throughthe tavern to avoid being hit, was shot in the left side. Both women were treated at an Oak Hill hospital and released.Puryear, 63, was lodged in the Fayette County Jail on charges of murder and two counts of felonious sssualt.He will appear before Oak Hill Magistrate Martin Petroski today on the charges.Born Jan. 24, 1942, at Ansted, Cox was a son of Mrs. Edna Brown of Winona.Other survivors include four brothers, Cleveland and Donald, both of Detroit, and Charles and William, both of Washington, D. C,, and two sisters, Mrs. Jean Young of Washington, D.C. and Mrs, Cheryl Medley of Detroit.The body is at the Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor. Arrangements are incomplete.
