Charged With Murder1Hearing Scheduled1Today For PuryearOAK HILL — A hearing is scheduled sometime today for Rubin Puryear, 63, Minden, on a murder charge and two counts of felonious assault.PURYEAR is accused in the shooting death of Vernon Cox, 25, Detroit, Mich., formerly of Winona, in a brawl at a tavern owned by Puryear at 12:30 a.m. Sunday on the Minden-Winona Road. Two women were also wounded during the fracas.According to Oak Hill State Police, Cox had gone to Pur* year’s tavern and apparentlygotten into an argument when the shooting began.COX reportedly pulled a gun on Puryear, who then brought forth a gun and shot Cox. After Cox was shot, his brother, Cleveland, stepped in to assist him when Puryear opened fire once again and erroneously shot Mrs. Billy Riggins, 37, Winona, in the left foot.Another woman, Victoria Medley, scrambling through the tavern to avoid being hit, was shot in the left side. Both women were treated and released at the Oak Hill Hospital.
