LOCALS.The Wilson Light Infantry will ap-pear on street parade this afternoon at 6 o’clock.Over one hundred people left for Wilmington and Ocean View yesterdaymorning on the excursion.Many are leaving town,and the trains are crowed with members to the different conventions this week.Two car loads of Italians, en-route to California were on the west bound Southern train Wednesday afternoon:Mr, Peter Briggs of Durham, brother to our townsman Mr. B. F. Briggs,held services at the Methodist church Sunday night.Mr. James Marshbourne, our very efficient policeman captured Solomon Richardson, who last Saturday evening escaped from the Goldsboro jail.Geo. Barnes, (col.) was tried on Monday before his honor, Mayor Bruton for disorderly conduct. t,In default of payment of fine he was committed to county jail.and quietly lodged the prisoners in jail, few knowing that the arrest had been made. Monday mornmg at 10 o'clock the six prisoners wet* brought before Mr. F. W. Barnes anciMaj. J. L. Weaver for trial. Durinj/ this trial Bennett Barnes was arrerted in the court house. Bill of indictment w as“con-spiracy. ^attempt to burn ^nd destroy property, and to murder if necessary.” Messrs. Aycock and Uzzeli appeared for the defendants. Jno. E. Woodard for the plaintiff. Addison Lamm who turned State’s evidence testified that he was initiated by James Montgomery and others of the band. They told him it was a good thing for the country, in that it saved expenses by attending to those who made themselves obnoxious to the community. He said that their signs were a]peculiar whistling, and the passing of the hand across the face. Ine counsel for the defendantssubmitted and each of the prisoners placed under a $400 justified bond for their appearance at the next term ofcourt.tlC1Is1?1;N1;tlProf. J. L. Murphy gave a boxing performance last Monday night in the Opera House. He entertained the small crowd present by punching thebag, and a sparring contest with his partner.Capt. L. D. We wish them much success in their new field.Allen Harris, (col.) who was in the fight at Black Greek last week and who has been keeping out of the way for several days was taken into custody last Saturday.A base ball team consisting of Messrs Saunders, Bynum, Person Tyson, Anderson, Walls, Nolly, Whitehead J, Wilkins R., Jordan, and Churchwell left Saturday for Black Creek to play ball with the team of that place. Wilson won by a score of 16 to 1.The presence of many pugilists in the city recently seems to have inspired many of our townsmen with a desire to enter into the art of pugilism. This desire has shown itself, we regret to say, in several affrays during the past week. No one so far has been seriously hurt.County ConventionIKA mule, which was hitched to a car4 laden with tobacco tines, became frightened last Monday afternoon and ran down Barnes St and across Howard Go’s cotton yard.scattering the flues as he went. In crossing the yard he ran into a horse and buggy, scarring the horse somewhat, no other damage was done.- At the Congressional Convention Tuesday last,'the Wilson delegation chose Jno. F. Bruton spokesman; Sheriffj. W. Crowell, committeeman on permanent organization; John E. Woodard committeeman on platform, and he was also nominated delegate to the Chicago convention by J. R. Uz-/ell.Mr. |. D-Gold was elected a member of the executive committee, from Wilson countyProi Connor at Teacher * Assembly.The Asheville Citizen speaks very highly of a paper read by Prof. Geo. W. Connor, of Wilson, N. C„ before the Teacher’s Assembly Wednesday morning, June i7th. Prof. Connor’s subject was ‘‘The necessity of local taxation for Public Schools.”Last Saturday at 1 o’clock the delegates from the various county precincts met in the Court House in Wilson for the purpose of selecting delegates to the Congressional Convention which met in Goldsboro Tuesday last and also to the State Convention which met in Raleigh Thursday. Mr. J. D, Bullock, chairman of the County] Executive Committee, called the meeting to order and in a few well timed remarks announced the purpose] of the meeting. Mr. J. R. Uzzell was presented by Dr. Albert Anderson and unanimously chosen as chairman. After taking the chair and announcing the purpose of the meeting, Mr. J. E. Woodard moved that C. W, Gold Editor of the Times be made permanent secretary. Mr. Woodard also moved that the chair appoint a committee of one from each district to recommend delegates to the State and Congressional Convention. Motion prevailed. While the committee was out, theiConvention was entertained by remarks from Mr. F. A. Woodard, Judge Connor, Col. Jno. F. Bruton, Jno. E. Woodard, S. A. Mewborne, A.B. Deans, Sheriff Crowell and Dr. J. T. Graves. Mr. J. E. Wooodard and A. B. Deans presented resolutions relating to the currency question which were refered to a committee, who after making some changes adopted one reaffirming our adherence to the Jeffersonian principles of Democracy, and declaring for the free and unlimited coinage of silver at a ratio of 16 to 1, irrespective of the action of any other country. This resolution was unami-mously adopted. A resolution offered by Judge Connor was also unanimously agreed to endorsing Mr. Woodard’s career in Congress, and offering him to the Congressional Convention as our standard bearer in the coming campaign. Col. Bruton offered two resolutions which were unanimously agreed to; one suggesting Judge Connor to the State Convention as a candidate for Justice of the Supreme Court; and the name of Julian S. Carr, as Wilson county’s choice for Governor. At that time the committee appointed to suggest delegates to the State and Congressional Conventions reported. The posse then divided into two parts one going to Black Creek, the other to Lucama. At Black Creek Montgomery and Jesse Bass were found, taken into custody and sent with guards to Wilson. In the meantime the party which had gone to Lucama had captured Wiley Johnston.
