Deputy Sheriff Smith Discovers His Lifeless Body Hanging in the Jail. *GREAT SYMPATHY EXPRESSED FORTHE FAMILY.• Between two and six o’clock last Thursday morning, Joseph Hoggatt who was confined in the jail charged with the murder of an infant, hung himself to the iron partition that separates the hallway from the cells.He took the sheet from his bed, tore it into slips and used them as a means to carry out his desperate purpose. At the top of the iron railing a strip was tied and a poor attempt at a slip noose was made in the other end of the rope. The suicide was discovered hanging from this frail rope when deputy sheriff Smith entered the jail at 6 o’clock Thursday morning. The body was facing the north, the head inclined to the right and his toes were touching the stone floor of the corridor. The body was slightly stooped, showing the determination of the unfortunate man to make a success of the job. A bruised spot was shown on the right side of the neck and this, together with the stooping posture left the impression that he had slowly strangled himself.The only other occupant of the jail was Maggie Hendricks, who isjointly charged with the murder ofthe infant. She was locked in one•of the cells on the south side of the building and the big iron partition door, separating the cells from the corridor was also locked. Hoggatt occupied the corridor. The two prisoners could communicate one with the other, but Mag Hendricks says the last time she talked with Hoggatt was about 11 o’clock Wednesday night, and that she was not disturbed by any noise after that time. At 2 o’clock Thursday morning Charley Plews says he talked with Hoggatt through the north window of the Jail and left the prisoner comparatively quiet.Coroner Kelley, of Livonia, was sent for and viewed the remains. The body was taken to his home on North High street and the funeral occurred Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock.The entire community deeply sympathizes with the aged mother of the deceased. She is an excellent Christian lady and respected by all. The unfortunate career of her son is directly traceable to bad company, gambling and all their attendant evils. The sad ending of Joseph Hoggatt is an object lesson for all young men who are just forming evil habits. Let them heed the warning.mm•.MA■».i%i
