Ill IIIIIU oBy Bill BauerMenomonie News BureauMENOMONIB — Alvin Taylor, through his attorney, pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect in Dunn County Circuit Court Monday to a charge of first-degree murder in the July 1985 shooting death of Robert Williams, 38, of Eau Claire.Taylor, a 40-year-old traveling entertainer whose last address was Portage, also has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Timothy Hayden, 27. Of Menomonie, on about March 26; first-degree murder in the stabbing death of James Severson, 42, of Eau Claire, in May 1986; and the theft of a firearm from Hayden's house.He earlier entered the same not guilty pleas to these charges in both Dunn and Eau Claire counties. He continues to be held in lieu of two $500,000 cash bonds in Dunn County and a $200,000 cash bond in Eau Claire County.Friends found Hayden's body in his Menomonie home at 408 20th Ave. E. on March 28 after they became suspicious when he failed to appear for a luncheon engagement. Severson was stabbed to death in his apartment at 113 AnndynwSt. in Eau Claire.Taylor also is being investigated as a possible suspect in the death ofa 33-year-old man who was believed to have died from injuries sustained in a Washington County traffic accident in late November1986.Authorities in that county are investigating whether Daniel Lundgren’s death was a traffic fatality or homicide. Lundgren, a native of Cloquet. Minn., managed a motel in West Bend at the time of his death.Dunn County Circuit Judge Donna J. Muza on June 12 found probable cause to believe a crime had been committed in the Williams death and ordered Taylor arraigned on that charge. Preliminary hearings on the other two homicides were waived by his two public defenders, Michael Tobin of Hudson and Lawrence Durning of Eau Claire.Williams was last seen by hiswife when she left for work at 9:45 a.m. July 17, 1985, and she reported his absence to the Eau Claire Police Department the next day.Williams’ body was recovered April 8 from a grave site on property Taylor rented in the town ofSee COMPETENCY, Page 8A
