At that time magmmmhe was living just south of hisPresent residence at 915 New Jer-g]y3ji|»ey street, where he has lived fornearly sixty years.Before going into police work he was in the hack business, which preceded taxi service.Mr, Monroe served four years as special agent for the Santa Ft rail! road. MONROEcall him “Uncle Jimmy.** Looking back on his career as a police officer, Mr.‘Monroe feels that he has experienced his share of thrills.Mr. Monroe was born April 28,1860, in a log cabin at the foot ofserved on the city police for ten years dunng the terms of Mayor A. L. Selig and Mayor George R. Gould from 1893 to 1903. During two yeara of the ten he served as city marshal, being elected by the citizens.Then for twelve and a half years he served the merchants in the capacity of night watchman. Mr. Monroe did not miss a single night during this period.When George L. Kreek was mayor of Lawrence he went after Monroe to serve as chief of police. Monroe refused two offers but accepted the third. He served two terms during the World War period and after, but returned to his position as night watchman when Robert House and Charles Decker shbwed him a petition sighed by practicably every merchant along Massachusetts street. He has been on the job fo|) the past ten yean and has missea only two nights from his duties.Mr. Monroe’s record would still be perfect but for a peculiar acci dent.
