Thompson of this city returned yesterday from the Saline district where he. accompanied by an interpreter, talked with the Wycliffe boys, who have been hunted by deputy United States marshals in that section for several months past. The* Wycliffe's side of the story as told him by Charles:“We did not kill Gilstrap in the fight with the marshals on March .ii( as has been reported, but Ben Hungry did. We had been scouting for several months and stopped one morning near- the Spavinaw postof-lice to. build a lire and get warm. While we were seated about the fire we heard voices and got up and ran. Wc heard shouts and at first supposed they were hunters. We h£ard several shots and also heard lt;logs barking and as they continued to follow us* we' finally decided that it was a posse after us with blood hounds.“About 4 o’clock in the afternoon we became exhausted and'went over to a ridge at the head of a ravine. The marshals and dogs came in sight then and the dogs ran close to us and baved at us on the side of the ridge. Ben Hungry, who had'been witii us but two weeks, was just over the ridge and could only be seen from the waist up. The marshals was the first one of us to shoot.“At the first report Gilstrap fell. Bot) Thompson picked up his gun and ran without firing a shot. A few more shots were exchanged and the marshals fled. We did not go to Gilstrap’s body, as has been reported. but remained where we were until night. Sinc6 then we have been Vetoing out of the way as best possible*. I trust our people will take the matter up with the proper authorities and see if they can’t do something for us. White and his supposed gang ■ of neacemakers t arc responsible for all this trouble.“M.y first trouble was on the 5th dav of June three years ago. My brothers and I were attending a stomp dance at Cochran prairie. Tn trying to quiet a row which had started I picked up a bloody knife which had been used, and Dan Bo-ney was in the act of cutting Andre3 Meigs* throat at the time, and # it »**ns thought that I did it. standing there as I was with that bloody blade in mv hand. A writ was issued for mvself and brothers, charg-birr us with assault with intent tokill.“Shortlv aft^r we w'weby Captain White, J. II.Gilstrap. Ponov waswonnderd. We tried to avoid them, but ran intlt;7 them and they opened fire on us without warning.“I threw my gun down, and thev shot the hair off mv head when T had mv hands up. Seeing they intended to kill me T turned and ran. After this I decided they didn’t want me to surrender, so I took my brothers and went to the woods.. “I love peace, I love my home and my children, and God knows. I have done nothing but what I have had to do.”C. A. Cade is Confirmed.
