A FORGER ARRESTED.A Young Man Nicely Caught Trying to sell a Note With a Forged Signature.A would be smooth worker got caught in Monmouth shortly before noon today. He gives his name as J. O. Swartz and says he is from Galesburg. His offense is forging the name of E. G. Bowman to a fifty dollar note.The note was one claiming to be made in favor of one Anderson, payable in thirty days and calling for fifty dollars and signed E. G. Bowman. The note had been written on common blank paper, and it is thought was written in the postottice. Swartz first presented it at the Monmouth National asking them to buy it. They did not want it and he took it across the street to the 2d National. Here he presented it to Everett Hardin who happened to be the only one in at the time, saying he wished to sell it. Hardin took it and thought it strange to see Bowman’s name to a note, as Bowman does all his business in this bank and never signs a promissory note. Hardin compared the signature to one he knew' to be genuine and found they were very similar, but Ins suspicions were aroused and he asked the man to cjtfl again when the cashier would le back and they would buy the note. Swartz took the paper and left the bank. Hardin, as soon as one of the force returned, went after the police. He found Officer Graham and Constable Penyx and put them onto the man. They arrested him at Ewing’s restaurant near the depot. He was searched immediately and about $10 and a bottle of chloroform were found on his person, but the note wras gone. He afterward told that he tore it up near the Model clothing store and thepieces were found and gathered up bythe officers. He was given his preliminary hearing before Justice Brady this afternoon and bound over to await the action of the grand jury.
