Saturday morning car* toons, and the Easter bunnv. roller coasters are part of the American childhood Not that they’re just for children, f or many, the fascination extends well into adulthood America has had a long-standing love affair with the roller coaster.The first successful coasters appeared in the UnitedStates around the beginning of this century, according to Robert M. Ca rtmell. a noted authority on roller coaster history. They were called “scenic railways” in those daysCedar Point researchers believe the first coaster inthe park was built in 1893. only 23 years after the resort was established with a bathhouse and picnic grounds in 1870 The coaster is believed to have been located on the beach, next to the Grand Pavillion.But the first well-known coaster at Cedar Point was the Racer, built in 1906 as part of the park's new amusement section The electric midway with rides was built when the first powerhouse was put into operation by George A Boeckling — the major developer of the park from 1897 through 1931.The Racer, also known as the Figure 8 Roller Toboggan, was damaged by a severe storm in the early 1900’s.
