Edward Tilburn. pastor of the Chiis-Uan church of Butte.Dr. Tilburn gave not only a very interesting and scholarly lecture, but also a clever exhibition of tricks he claimedwere used by so-eallerl spirit mediums, which he later revealed.The programme of the evening consisted of a lecture on 4*Spooks and Spookdom.,T a light seance entitled. “Trying the Spirits/' and a dark searen*. “The Spirit Cabinet.”During the programme, several musical selections were rendered.Dr. Tilburn makes an excellent appearance on the lecture platform, and his manner of speaking continually holds the attention of his auditors.In speaking of the common superstitions of the day. he gradually led from one subject to another, finally arguing the relationship of superstition to the belief in spirit mediums.He then took up the belief in spirits in ancient times and compared it with that of the present.Said Dr. Tilburn, in the latter part of his address. ‘T say there is nothing in their tricks which I cannot reproduce. Then again admitting the possibility of some truth in the assertions of the mediums. what good does a spirit do if it visits the earth dimply to knock over a table or ring a bell, and why should any attention, therefore, be paid to it?”Dr. Tilburn then related a short history of the origin of spiritualism in the rnited Stales, and asserted that 40 years afterward. Katherine Fox, the of the originators, confessed the fraud.Throughout the entire lecture the doctor Snterspeised his remarks with humorous sayings, which kept bis au-de nee continually in good humor. In ail his work. Dr. Tilburn was ably aided by his daughter, who combined with him in making the entertainment a su« -cess.
