Vandalism and theftare earlierIncreased vandalism and theft in the area appear to be occurring earlier this year than in previous years according to localpolice.Both Teulon Constable Joe1 Laughlin and Sergeant Arlie Corbett of Stonewall said in recent interviews that vandalism usually escalates later in summer, about the time when students finish school.In Stonewall recently, acts of vandalism have included stealing police signs, breaking windows and defacing school properly.Stony Mountain School Principal Cathy Mollard in a telephone interview last week, said a rock was thrown through a kindergarten window in the school early May 24, although the culprit this time was an adult.Mrs. Mollard also related an incident of human waste being spread on Stony Mountain School swines in the playground areathis yearand around some doors. She seemed to feel the vandals were not from this area and said that many socials held at the Stony Mountain Recreation Centre (close to the school) attract people from outside the area who may, or may not be committing vandalous acts.Recent vandalism in the Teulon area includes theft of police car lights, highway and railway signs, a car and a tractor, defacing private property and breaking and entering.Although both Teulon and Stonewall police officers agree that some vandalous acts are committed by adults, they said juveniles still commit the majority.Constable Laughlin of Teulon felt that most of the juveniles who commit these acts are either unemployed, out of school or have nothing better to do.
