Sam Shine, Spencer garage owner and auto parts dealer, was the victim of a vicious assault early Monday evening when five young hoodlums, said to be employed on the paving crow north and west of Spencer, entered his place of business on Main street and pum-meled him in retaliation for an accusation that one of their number, W. E. Beclcbar, had attempted earlier in the evening to steal a used auto Bpring from the shop. As a result Bcckbar and a brother, Charles, are in the Clay county jail. W. E. Beckbar was arrested Tuesday afternoon by Sheriff Fred Erickson and Deputy Harry Wllsey as he waB at work on the paving and was arraigned before Mayor W. H. Lewis on a charge of assault and battery. He denied his guilt and refused to name his alleged companions in the attack. Mayor Lewis held him under $100 bonds which were not posted and a trial will be had Thursday morning.Later Tuesday, Sheriff Erickson and Spencfer police arrested Beck-bar's brother, Charles, at his rooms. Charles confessed to participation in the assault and was given fifteen days in Jail by Justice Jensen.W. E. Beckbar was Identified by Shine as the man who entered his place of business Monday evening under the guise of buying a used car part. Shine alleges Beckbar attempted to conceal a spring and ran away with it, but upon beingin turn, also waxed angry and the two engaged in a verbal battle that ended with Beckbar backing out the door threatening to come back and get you.”A short time later, according to Shine’s tale, Beckbar returned with his brother and three other young men. The trio leaped from the car and entered the garage and were about to assault Harry Shine, brother of Sam, when W. E. Beckbar is alleged to have called to them that they had the wrong man. Sam Shine entered the garage at that moment, and the three, reinforced by the two remaining In the car, struck Shine several times, blacking one eye and inflicting several bruises and cuts. It Is alleged They escaped in a car.Seek Three Others With the confession of Charles Beckbar and .the holding of W. E. Beckbar, the sheriffs office and local police hope to arrest the remaining three hoodlums within a short time. The Beckbara refuse to reveal their names, but the police have been advised as to their identity. Tuesday night the officers sought them at their rooms, but were refused admission be-1 cause they had no warrants.
