A timely halt is being called upon the people who are making our city ao noted as a “wide open” town. The police board on Monday ordered the superintendentand captain of police to use all efforts intheir power to suppress gaming of all kinds. The gaming bouses have been notified and it is believed that, for a time at least, an honest effort will be made to enforce the order. It was also ordered that the officers ascertain if there are any wine rooms or saloons in the city visited by girls under age, or any other minors, and if anysuch be found that the superintendent or captain see that proper complaints be filed against the proprietors of such places. It is said that the grand jury are looking after the disreputable women and an effort will be made to drive them from the town. A number of persons who own buildings rented for improper purposes have been summoned before the jury. They are indictable under the law and if they do not compel the buildings to be vacated they will be indicted and will answer the charge in court. The police havea record of the various houses of ill repute, and the grand jury has beenput in possession of the information.Charges have been prefered against several policemen for unbecoming conduct. Yesterday morning officer Win. A. Lewis was dismissed from the force, and Henry Kabbis resigned rather than stand a trial. Charges are to be inves-itaged against officers Goodpasture and Chris Racugien. Women figure in all these charges. There is talk of enforcing the law closing saloons at eleven o’clock at night and on Sunday, but we must not expect too much from this spasm of virtue.
