Richmond HillFlashbackIn Years Cone ByOne hundred and twenty-three years ago, Richmond Hill and district was shocked and alarmed by reports of the terrible murder of Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper, Hannah Montgomery. Perpetrators of the crime were the hired man, McDermott and the hired girl, Grace Marks.IsonWilliam Harrison, Richmond Hill’s early historian, wrote, in 1908, that in the year of the I murder, 1843. his parents and he, then nine years of age, liv-el directly across Yonge Street at Elgin Mills, from the Kinnear home and “the faces of the murderers and their unfortunate victims were all familiar to me”.Captain Kinnear was a gentleman of reputed wealth, of aristocratic bearing, who was plea-, sant and kind to all around him.Hannah Montgomery, the other victim, was of medium height, a well-built happy woman, who w»s always cheerful and very neighborly, and known to all in the area as “Nancy”.McDermott was a man of \ery different character. He was morose and churlish. During the time he worked for Kinnear he built up a reputation for having a total disregard for the truth. VLittle is known of Grace Marks, who had been in the Kinnear home for only a few months.
