Edwin L. Mechem, cannot clean up the obvious corruption at the state penitentiary” because “his hands are- tied by the professional politicians/’Any action by Gov. Mcchem to clean, up the penitentiary would offend that old-time politician, Joe Tondre, who is warden.” Grantham spoke to otbhr Democratic candidates for state and federal offices.“Deadheads” on Tayroll He also charged that Mechem has allowed “deadheads” on the state oayroil and has violated most of his solemn pledges to the people.”Grantham ma'de his charges as the candidates also heard a plea from Sen. Dennis Chavez that they “stick together and beat the whey out of the opposition.”The former U, S. attorney declared that during - his campaign ( he proposes, to show that Mechem = has 'given. Let's stick together and beat the whey out of the opposition, And it can be done if we stick together and notlet outside sources, overzealous friends or inspired newspaper articles keep up apart.Grantham PleasedGrantham marie no secret of his satisfaction with' the telegram. He agreed that some of Chavez’ sup-j porters -were in the Frazier 'camp ’ but added, “I had no intimation at1 any time that he personally took any part in the primary campaign or was against me.”In his statement Grantham used several of the same charges which Mechem used against the Democrats in winning two years ago.Among these is the charge that there are now “deadheads” on the state payroll and that Mechem is concentrating on building up a political machine at the expense of the taxpayers.Singling Out the Revenue Bureau, Grantham declared that Mechem.cannot trim “deadheads” there because it “would offend.. . . Politician Manuel Lujan and that carpetbagger from Indiana, Fred Moxey, who is Governor in fact.”Bureau Salaries UpGrantham pointed out that the cast of operating the Revenue Bureau has increased some $400,000 a year, in salaries alone. BARNESSANTA-FE, June 16 (TP)—New Mexico penitentiary officials use six main types.of punishment to hold unruly, convicts in line.Prisoners who. disobey, prison rules may be placed in .solitary confinement; -go to .the dark cell or “ungeon”; be placed on bread and water; lose privileges; be confined' to their cell, or lose earned good time.Those are - the punishments shown in the official prison records kept for each _ convict. The records ■ were examined recently by an AP reported without objection .or- interference byprison authorities.
