By providing* a plentiful supply of vegetables, the community gardens have made possible a morek »-,*• k • »N‘ . *!*— . . ' * a ^* . f ' % .■» v • - \ \ 'varied diet for the Indians which hasresulted in a general improvement in ) their physical condition.Community gardens on the reserve1 have also served to stimulate the in-itorost of the Indians in their individual gardens. In one agency, before the advent of the community garden, 3,(H)o Indians raised onlv about 2 000bushels of vegetables in a vear. Withthe introduction of the communitygarden, l,f00 bushels were produced in it the first year and f,00o bushelsof vegetables were grown in the individual gardens of the Indians. Soonthe total production of the auencvCf «'was increased to 20.000 bushels. Atfirst large root cellars were made tostore the produce but later the Indians commenced to dig cellars oftheir own, and the community rootfthouses are now used onlv for the 'Isurplus stores and seed.The first step in the introduction of community gardens to tin* Indianreserves is the education of the In- V dians to the idea. When this hasobeen accomplished the management w of the gardens can be entirely the1 S work of the natives.
