Standford and Leary had arrived at the Three Mile house when they observed a man coming up the road. ' ' ^When within a short distance of the police the man in the road pulled his 1 revolver and emptied It in the direction of Leary. Leary emptied his revolver at the man and Standford fired five shots, none of which is believed to have taken effect.rMelville then turned into the road leading toward Lake Chabot. Showing that he was desperate and ready to kill to make his escape, the boy banditnext clashed with Policemen Gehrmarn and Fraser at the Midway saloon in the Benicia road, these men havingbeen stationed there to guard the roadto Benicia. .After the shooting at the Three Mile house the bandit evidently made his way across the fields and it was after midnight when he approached the road at Midway. He was seen crossing the road a short distance away and Gehr-man and Frazer gave chase.REVOLVER DUEL IX FIELDrteroeemade a record for daring nerve and lucky escapes. He is believed to be the man .who held up and robbed salons at Lodf, Livermore, Stockton, Sacramento and Martinez. The last case is positive, and he fits, the description of the man wanted for several holdups.Melville is suspected also of being the bandit who held up. a streetcar crew in Sacramento last week. He has been a marked man for several days, the fact that he traveled on a bicycle and made but little attempt to disguise himself enabling the police of various places to obtain good descriptions of him.Melville is about 20 years of age. 5 feet 6 inches tall, and weighs about 150 pounds. He has dark clothes and a slouch hat, smooth faced and Homannose.PARADERS BOOST*Gehrmann started toward the Higue-ra ranch and was almost nipped by a bullet a few minutes later when the bandit approached from a field and began shooting. One of the bullets struck the fence close to Gehrman*. Before Gehrmann could get through the fence Melville had disappeared in the field.Frazer followed through the field and came close to his man shortly afterwards. Then followed a revolver duel during which the bandit shouted defiance at the police and fired 15 or 20 times.Frazer thinks he may have wounded the bandit, who disappeared in a swamp lower in the wheat field shortly after 1 o'clock. Since that time he has not been seen. ^net01reSAN JOSEVoters to Decide Upon $375,000Issue for Municipal Improvements Today[Special Ditpaich io The Cali]SAN JOSE, June 15.—Judging from the enthusiasm displayed during the parade of 2,000 men and a big automobile section behind five bands onrOSSES SCOUR COUNTRYhg{fyne1enThe various posses scoured the country between Vallejo and Benicia during the day. It is not believed that Melville had an opportunity to escape from the vicinity where he was last seen. It is thought-that the bandit was forced to stop for rest after his encounter with Frazer, and since daylight it has been impossible for him to get away. All ranchers have been notified of the man hunt, qjid Melville will be unable to obtain any food without exposing himself to those who are on the lookout for him. That Melville's ammunition has given out Is the belief of the police. About 100 rounds were taken from his satchel and the tool case of his bicycle, together with two revolvers. It is certain, however, that the boy bandit has armed himself again, and he may be carrying a good supply of cartridges. His foolhardy act in bringing on the fight at the Three Mile house shows him to be anything but a clever criminal—more probably a youth with his mind Inflamed by dime novel tales.ACTRESS' PICTURE IN BAGdet1.n•There Is no definite Information as to the home town of the boy bandit.
