Frank Melville. a young desperado. Is hiding tonight somewhere In the hills between Vallejo and Benicia. All avenues of escape are believed to have been cut off by the various posse*.Sheriff J. J. Benicia and Martinez are scattered about thecountryside.Sheriff J. J. McDonald returned to the city late this evening to swear in more deputies. McDonald does not believe Melville has escaped from the tract of country that is now surrounded by the posses. He says that no boats are missing on the straits and thebandit bas not crossed the channelDozen Holdups Charged. McDonald thinks It possible that Melville may have doubled back over the route traveled last night, but unless he .did this within three hours after the duel with Frazer and Gehrmann, be could not have escaped the policemen after daylight.Possessed of nerve and daring which borders upon foolhardiness, young Melville has been the principal figure In a dozen or more of lone bandit holdups during the last two weeks1, and. although by no means a clever criminal, he has by sheer good fortune escaped the sheriffs of several counties.Melville cam* to Vallejo Tuesday, after the holdup of the Ferry saloon at Martinez Monday night.’ Charles W. Pick, the proprietor, and James Hamilton, a porter, were held up at the point cf a revolver, while Melville took 127.50 from the cash register, $5 from the two men. and two gold watches.Satchel Left at LodgingsIt was learned by Chief of Police W. T. Standford that Melville was in the city and had taken a room at the Maglll house in Marin street. His bicycle was found in front of the building and his satcheJ containing two revolvers, together with the picture of the girl of whom he is thought to be enamored, were found.Policemen kept watch on the room Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night, but their quarry did not return. It was thought that he had been warned and made bit escape,The police kept the fart of Melville being In town Tuesday a secret, as itwas believed that he would come back for his belongings if he thought everything was safe.Landlady Warns PoliceLast night Melville came to this cityfrom Benicia and went to his roomabout 8 o'clock.
