An Important tate Cuse. The ease of ilie Stale against Frank Wood anti Alonzo Campbell was called up in (be circuit court Ibis morning, and is still on trial. The prisoners are held on the charge of assault and battery with iutent to kill Mr. George Harness, an old and well-known citizen of Jackson township. On the night of the 17th of last May Harness was stopped oil a public highway near his house by the two prisoners, who knocked him down and beat him until he was rendered insensible. They then disappeared but were captured soon afterwards at Shelbyville and brought to this city. Failing to give 1 j bond they have since remained in jail. From what can be learned it seems that Harness had appeared against the young men jn a ease wherein they were charged with stealing chickens. This made them indignant, and they sought revenge. About thirty witnesses have been Bubpeened, and i the case will not be given to the jury un. r j til late to-night. Kelson and Myers arc the attorneys for the prisoners, and a o strong effort is being made to show that £ ] Harness is a quarrelsome old fellow, I; having been “slugircd” on account of the 0 ; numcnmt threats that he had made. The :■ sHnte is ably represented by M. 1). j Fuusler and Frank Harness, of Kokomo.J I'J; a nephew of the plaintiff.
