Leaving the Kirkendoll party, Abbott is said to have followed the Webb girls, who accompanied others on a ride. Finally Abbott, who had been serving as fiddler and caller at the dance at the Kirkendoll home, desisted and disappeared, later reaching the Webb home and abducting the girl from her bed, where she lay asleep.When first taken into custody of the authorities, Abbott declared he had not been drinking, then said he could,, not remember the events of the night and early morning. He appeared to be in a stupor, but showed unmistakeable signs of his bout with the girl, who apparently had put up a stiff fight to repulse his attack.
