County Deputies Are Discharged%ANN ARBOR. Mich. (AP) -Washtenaw County Sheriff Fred Postill discharged two deputies after a rock band filed suit, claiming the lawmen roughed them up and threatened their lives.The deputies, William Tom-melein and Randy Evans, were charged by the sheriff's department with violating departmental rules on the handling of detained or arrested persons.TJie Pennsylvania band, Blue Magic, is seeking §6 million in damages in the federal lawsuit.The suit alleges the deputies frisked members of the band at gunpoint, shoved them around and tlireatened them. One band member said Vie stiffen'd a broken ankle-fend members' said they were returning from a concert in Kalamazoo on May 10 when they stopped at a restaurant near Ann Arbor.Tbe suit says a waitress told police she saw one of the members carrying a gun. The group was frisked and police found two starter pistols in their van. but band members said the guns shoot only blanks and arc ■ used in tbeir actOne band member, Charles Kelley, was charged with possession of firearms and thegroup was held for about 10 hours, the suit charges.Postil] said the deputies were suspended without pay last Friday after they refused to cooperate in an investigation of the incidentTwo Ann Arbor police officers on the scene were described in the suit, although they were nut named as defendants. Ann Arbor police said they are investigating the officers' behavior in the incident.Post ill said there are five departmental charges against the two deputies. They are:—Gross and negligent mishandling of property and persons:—Gross mishandling of persons suspected of committing lt;i crime;—False reports to supervisors;—Withholding Information from supervisors;—Willfully engaging in activities detrimental to the department.4‘From everything we've been able to gather, they (Blue Magic) seem to be a responsible group and their statements about the matter to us made their reports seem credible,” said Laird Harris, Postiirs administrative assistant.
