Jarvis:Late Sunday afternoon deputy sheriff Jams, ot this county, at Sumner, was informed that the outlaws were lurking about n school house a short distance from Sumner in the edge of Wilson’s grove.Seeding four or live trusty companions-Jarvis started for the school house. -Sot finding e desperadoes where expected Jarvis and his men scattered and entered the grove. The officer ;4nd Al-rnon Tibbitts kept together and soon they heard the Barbers coming towards them. Concealing themselves they waited until the latter came within a row feet of them, when Jarvis arose and hailed them. Their reply was an immediate discharge of their pistols at the officer, one shot entering his left left breast and lodging in his left shoulder. He gallantly returned fire after receiving his wound and the outlaws took to their heels. Mr. Miller, at quite a distance fired some shots at them with aWraohester rifle, but without effect. When they came towards'Jarvis it is supposed they were disturbed whileI- —---—it was, a rope was procured to hang them and the Sheriff and his party had to lash their steeds into a g;illop to get away. hLODGED IN JAIL.The Barbers were lodged in our jail Tuesday morning. The writer saw them in the afternoon. They are hard looking characters. Their faces are somewhat bruised by the vigorous treatment administered to them by our German citizens, but otherwise they are unhurt. They claim that since the shooting of Shepard they have been until recently in the vicinity of Clay Center, Kansiis, engaged in farm work. THE HANGING ON ElUDAY NIGHT.On Wednesday night, as reported bv us hist- week, the Barbers were brought to this city by wagon, and were afterwards taken east on the 1.30 train. It was reported they were to be taken to Dubuque for safe keeping. Instead of this, however, the party stopped at Independence and the prisoners were placed in jail there, where they remained until Friday morning, when they were brought buck here on the noon train, and then taken back to JVaverly. It was generally supposed here they would be hung that night, and they were.
