)ROW AT MENIFEE M'ARTHUR KILLEDA quarrel said to have been over crops raised on McArthur’s farm, resulted in the killing of Charley McArthur by Marion McCarty at Menifee on Saturday. McCarty was manager of a farm owned by McArthur and one version of the fatal affray was that McArthur made an accusation that a , whiskey still was being operated onthe place, to which he objected. A quarrel followed. McArhur, who was armed with a pistol, did not shoot.I Met arty is said to have gone in the | house and reurned with a shotgun, demanding that McArthur put up his . pistol. McArthur refused, it is said ; and McCarty fired, the charge of sh t [eviscerating McArthur and causing | j almost instant death.McCarty was still at large this afternoon at 2 o’clock, according to an unofficial message from Morrilton. However, he had offered to return and surrender if Conway county officers would guarantee him protection. Officers here had received no official summons from Morrilton to he on the look out for the alleged fugitive.According to on,- report of the killing, McCarty hurried to his fallen adversary and gathered him up in his arms. McArthur is said to have murmured several times, “You did not do it on purpose, did you? After his death, McCarty is said to have hired a negro driver and started toward Conway, intending to cash a check for $100 which he had. However, the negro persuaded him to turn back and he returned to Menifee. A negro was a witness to the alleged murder.The McArthur family owns considerable land near Menifee and McCarty was reared by them, Charley McArthur making him farm manager. Their wives were also related.
