Walker,an Afro-American, catcher of the Syracuse baseball club in the season of 1889, who about two months ago killed Patrick Murray, a tough, in an encounter provoked by the dead man, was acquitted June 3. The plea was self-defence. When the verdict was announcedthe court house was thronged with spectators, who received it with a tremendous roar of cheers, which Justice Kennedy in vain attempted to suppress. Even when the justice ordered the sheriff to arrest the offenders against the dignity of the law, there was no cessation in the demonstration, and. in despair, the court was adjourned.
