About two o’clock on Sunday morning the “ Horse Thief Protection Company,’’ undid* guis^d, paid a visit to the house, and, taking Mr. Swander f rom his bed, removed him some distance from the house and made preparations for hanging him, the cause of complaint being that he would not tell them whether the young men had stolen the wheat. After a lengthy parley, however, their blood cooled, and they concluded that riding him on a rail would be about the proper thing for them to do. Finally, they concluded to forego even that pleasure, and, after detaining their prisoner for over two hours, permitted him to return to the house. Swander thinks he will make the atmosphere of Democrat township disagreeably warm for some of these amateur lynchers.
