John and a man by the name of McCrady got out. Adair had i)een drinking rather freely and seemed to be in a quarrelsome mood. He attacked Claud Ford, a carpenter, kicking and pumeling him about the yard until George Bethell interfered and told Adair that he wouldahave to arrest him if he did not go behave himself. Adair then drew his knife and chrsed Bethell around awhile, but was at length persuaded to go away. He went over to the Kansas City Southern depot and several times asserted that he intended to go back to Tandy’s house and kill George Betheli. Mr. Bethell^telephoned to City Marshal Curtis come up and arrest John, but before the marshal could get to the Adair place, John had returned and renewed his attack on Bethell. The latter retreated, to the porch, with Jobu striking at him with p knife’. At the door Bethell stopped and told Adair he would have to shoot him if he (lid not desist. Adair kept advancing and Bethell shot, the bullet taking effect in Adair’s shoulder. Instead of frightening or stopping him, this seemed to enrage him all the more and he continued to use his knife mostvicious-ly.
