Last evening Miss Emna Fenton, keeperof tbe Florence Restaurant. 011 First-«t., made information hefort* Justice IIighborgor, against one Bon Hogan, a prize tighter, charging biro with assault and battery. A jury trial was demanded by the defendant, and granted. Evidence was introducedshowing that he entered the Florence restaurant in a violent manner and knocked the complainant down. Hogan whs found guilty and fined $25 and costs, amountingto $12,50 mote.E. L. Keenan and \V. H. Cropsy, Esqrs., appeared for the prosecution, and James II. mitb, Esq., for the defence. The developments in this case were peculiarly rich. The testimony was very direct and to thi-IPr —poiut, much of it more forcible than elegant. The summing up by tbe learned counsel on either side were master pieces of forensic eloquence, rather perhaps after the model 01 Parson Brown low than of Webster or other luminares of that ilk. One of the counsel for the prosecution was very frequently interrupted by tbe irate‘‘French Kate,” whose remarks were neither polite4nor chaste, though rather sarcastic. The charge to the jury by Justice Higbberger was very affecting. He seemed to be remarkably happy in quotations. The jury were very patriotic.They served their country in preference to going to the circus, though probably their evening’s entertainment was full as satisfactory.Torpedoe* in Wclln.Our belief is, that the plan of resuscitating old wells by sinking and exploding in them torpedoes, is perfectly feasible. It appears that a number of men had been throwing dice in Schuylet’s saloon. A man named Gus ileal won five dollars and a cup. A dispute aro.se, and several of the men went out. Ileal was called to the door and uponopening it received a severe sfabfrom a knifelie immediately drew a revolver and fired several times, wounding two men. The others ran off. It was reported last night that one of the men shot had died, but we cannot vouch for tbe truth of the report.
