Mr Sloper keeps a boarding-house, in which Cameron boarded, and while Mr Sloper and his wife had gone to the circus, leaving the little girls with a younger brother and still younger sister in bed asleep, the villain entered their chamber, got into the bed, and waked up the girl. He first attempted to remove the clothes from her, telling her that her father had told him to come in and take care of the children. She began to scream, and lie first offered her a ninepence to be quiet; but she persisted, and he then partially smothered her cries. Mr Fonsbee and Ins wife, who were in the room below, heard the cries, and, upon reaching the landing above, heard one of the children say —“ You’ll smother me, and I’ll tell my father.”— They then opened the door, and found Cameron near (he bed, undressed.
